July 15, 2026: Digital Activism
Have you thought about....?
I have been thinking about digital activism and the role the internet plays in creating social change.
I believe the internet has made activism more accessible and, in many cases, more effective. A single post, video, or hashtag can spark a trend, and when content goes viral, it can ignite conversations and encourage people to take action.
One well-known example is the Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised millions of dollars for ALS research while increasing public awareness of the disease. Social media has also given young people a platform to advocate for issues they care about and organize events and demonstrations. Sustainability activists, for instance, use digital platforms to inspire millions to learn about climate change and participate in environmental movements worldwide. More recently, social media has become a space where people share information, personal stories, and humanitarian appeals related to conflicts such as the Russia–Ukraine war and the Israel–Gaza war.
While these platforms can raise awareness and mobilize support, they also highlight the importance of digital citizenship. Misinformation can spread quickly, making it essential to verify sources, think critically, and engage respectfully with others.
Ultimately, digital activism is most effective when online engagement is paired with responsible digital citizenship. Sharing and advocating for meaningful causes while practicing respectful dialogue, verifying information, and thinking critically can create a positive and lasting impact.
Your thought about supporting online engagement with digital citizenship is very valuable. While there are true causes that require public support, too many people fall prey to misinformation. In the end, this can seriously harm the original cause of online engagement.
